FILM STYLE: Queen and Slim
Queen and Slim featuring Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith, is the 2019 film directed by Melina Matsoukas with screenplay by Lena Waithe. It tells the story of a young Black couple who go on the run after killing a police officer who pulls them over for a "routine" check. That, is just the beginning, there is so much more to the film and they take us on a journey of twists and turns, . still now it is an important story to be told about the difficult circumstances that black men and women in America and globally face with the authorities.
Melina Matsoukas, who is known for her work directing music videos for the likes of Beyonce and Rihanna, was a big influence in Shiona Turini joining the team as costume designer as they had previously worked together creating the looks for Beyoncé’s groundbreaking Formation video.
Turini used her role as an opportunity to represent the Black community of fashion designers, paying homage to previous generations and this one by collaborating with Dapper Dan, Diddy and Pyer Moss.
The results are some striking, bold looks that complement the story and give you an insight into the personalities and characters in the film.
